My first stop during Antigua’s Inaugural Restaurant Week was a lovely little restaurant in English Harbour named Colibri. It was a place that I was excited to try out because I had never eaten there before. I assemble a trio of fellow foodies from the app formerly known as Twitter and we made plans to sample the goods.
The atmosphere was amazing and the decor gave the restaurant a nice homey feel. We settled on a table outside and listened as our capable waitress gave us the rundown on the Restaurant Week menu.
Colibri ended up being my favourite Restaurant Week discovery. I enjoyed it so much that I went to the restaurant TWICE. In true foodie fashion, I switched up my food order so that I had a better sense of their menu.
Their website write up mentions that they consistently receiving 5 star reviews! Colibri has been awarded “Traveler’s Choice” on TripAdvisor, named the #2 restaurant in Antigua by TripSavvy and “Top Choice” by Lonely Planet Travel Guide.
Night One
To start us off, the waitress brought out the Amuse Bouche! The Salt fish fritter with creole tomato sauce was a lovely local touch to a menu that is French Creole inspired. Honestly, E MIN SLAP!
For the starter, I had the Rillettes de Poisson which is basically smoked Mahi Mahi (Fish) mixed with shallots, capers, and arugula mayonnaise served with blinis. I quite enjoy fish and this starter was a solid dish. It built on the flavours of the amuse bouche and had me excited to dig in to my main course.
For the main I tucked in to the Filet Mignon de Porc au Curry. This cajun spiced pork tenderloin is cooked sous-vide and served with a sweet potato and plantain mash and curry sauce. It is a nice main however, it needed a touch of salt to bring out those flavours.
Let’s get into the SWEETS! How lush is this little dessert spread is! I had this both nights and it did not disappoint. The board featured mini no bake chocolate cake and a mango cheesecake. The Mango topping was so refreshing and the chocolate tasted like it came straight out the cocoa pods from Dominica. It was incredibly rich.
Night Two
The amuse bouche was the same as night one and it STILL SLAPPED! The consistency in flavour was pleasing to my tastebuds. I switched up and had a terrine to start. While the visual might not be super inviting, the flavour was a pleasant surprise. The bread was also really nice and I think it may be baked in-house. The caramelised onions on the side were an excellent touch.
For the main, I swapped over to fish and settled on the Catch of the Day which was a lovely grilled Tuna. The potatoes which came as the side had chili flake toppings and this added a subtle kick to the meal. This was better than the main on night one. I paired the tuna with the white wine option and had a grand time.
Overview
The customer service at Colibri was top notch! Didier, the manager, was extremely friendly and helpful and the staff are open and funny. They are also willing to share their favourites on the menu which helps narrow down the decisions.
The suggested wine pairings for the mains on both days were good. They really complimented the meal and helped to bring out the flavour. The cocktail bar is also a hit with me. I had an Old Fashioned Rum Punch that was a solid 5 stars. The Food service was not stalled at all.
This restaurant is a place I would return to when they re-open in November. A solid 4/5 experience.
